Complex documents images segmentation based on Steerable Pyramid features

Authors

M. Ben Jlaiel, S. Kanoun, R. Mullot,A. M. Alimi

Abstract:

Page segmentation and classification is very important in document layout analysis system before it is presented to an OCR system or for any other subsequent processing steps. In this paper, we propose an accurate and suitably designed system for complex documents segmentation. This system is based on steerable pyramid transform. The features extracted from pyramid sub-bands serve to locate and classify regions into text (either machine printed or handwritten) and non-text (images, graphics, drawings or paintings) in some noise-infected, deformed, multilingual, multi-script document images. These documents contain tabular structures, logos, stamps, handwritten script blocks, photos etc. The encouraging and promising results obtained on 1,000 official complex document images data set are presented in this research paper. We compared our results with those from existing state-of-the-art methods. This comparison shows that the proposed method performs consistently well on large sets of complex document images

Arabic and Latin Script Identification in Printed and Handwritten Types Based on Steerable Pyramid Features

Authors

Mohamed Benjelil, Slim Kanoun, Rémy Mullot, Adel M. Alimi

Abstract

Arabic and Latin script identification in printed and handwritten nature present several difficulties because the Arabic (printed or handwritten) and the handwritten Latin scripts are cursive scripts of nature. To avoid all possible confusions which can be generated, we propose in this paper an accurate and suitable designed system for script identification at word level which is based on steerable pyramid transform. The features extracted from pyramid sub bands serve to classify the scripts on only one script among the scripts to identify. The encouraging and promising results obtained are presented in this research paper

Une méthode de segmentation d'Images de Documents Composites

Authors

M. Ben Jlaiel, S. Kanoun, A. M. Alimi

Abstract:

Authors

Karim Baâti, Slim Kanoun, Mohamed Benjlaiel

Abstract

In this paper, we treat the problem of script differentiation. Our aim is to use the global approach to resolve the problem of differentiation between the Arabic and the Latin scripts in printed and handwritten natures. In our method, features are extracted using three tools: Gabor filters, gray-level co-occurrence matrices and wavelets. The results of differentiation obtained on a base of 800 Arab and Latin documents, printed and handwritten are presented. The highest rate of correct identification is obtained with gray-level cooccurrence matrices (84.75%). We can consider this rate as satisfactory taking into account the simplicity of the approach and the complexity of the treated problem

Decision Support System (DSS) have been successfully implemented and have been widely accepted in many fields such as: banking, retailing and distribution for shopping bag analysis, fraud detection, telecommunication, customer classification and especially in the medical field.

Our objective is to develop a Clinical Dynamic Decision Support System (CDDSS) based on knowledge discovery in databases (KDD). It control the evolution of patients' state and predict the probability of occurrence of NI. Such system assists physicians in their work, it allows them to understand the evolution of patient during the period of intensive care unit (ICU) to take decision at time to prevent the contraction of NI.

On the basis of its knowledge, CDDSS deals with decision problem. KDD offers a decision support tool for extraction, interpretation and validation of knowledge; it solves the problems of data exploitation to facilitate decision-making.

The temporal dimension in clinical data analysis plays a critical role such as: discovering temporal patterns at the disease, better understanding the progression of patient’s state, explaining past events such as the possible causes of infection, and predicting future events such as possible complexities based on a patient’s current status.

Recent year have seen an important interest in temporal data mining techniques.

Association rules is one of the most important and simple data mining techniques for discovering the associations among data, in a certain extent by adding temporal dimension, makes it possible to predict the future, according to the past.

On the basis of the temporal association rules, we aim to propose an algorithm to extract knowledge from temporal database. The goal here is to be able to anticipate if factors risk will cause the appearance of an infection throughout the hospitalization period.
